Print Materials are the key for Additive Manufacturing

Additive manufacturing is a rapidly evolving technology with immense potential in a fast-growing market. The flexibility of 3D printing enables innovative part production, reducing lead times and cutting costs. But at the heart of this process? The materials.

For large-scale additive manufacturing, materials must be capable of consistent, high-speed extrusion while meeting mechanical and environmental standards and minimizing post-print distortion.

Applications include molds or blanks used in creating composite or concrete 3D parts, as well as structural and non-structural components. Selecting materials suited to each specific application is essential, and understanding these requirements is critical before starting the printing process.

 Innomerix Thermoplastic Additive Materials

After testing various materials from other suppliers, we found that few met the specific demands of large-scale additive manufacturing—many had high warpage and were prohibitively expensive. This led us to create our own solutions. In 2023, we launched Innomerix in Nunawading, Melbourne, Australia. Innomerix specializes in advanced thermoplastic composites for additive manufacturing, extrusion, and injection molding, focusing on eco-friendly products made from recycled materials to reduce carbon footprint and promote sustainability.

CNC Design has made a significant investment in developing thermoplastic composites through Innomerix. We provide some of the highest-quality pellet-based additive materials on the market, backed by a skilled technical team and an in-house production and testing facility, located alongside one of the largest VSF 3D thermoplastic composite printers in Melbourne. This setup allows us to rapidly develop, test, 3D print, and evaluate materials—all in a single day. Our expertise in large-scale printing ensures our materials are ready for real-world applications.

Innomerix offers a cost-effective, local material supply for large-scale additive manufacturers across Southeast Asia and Australasia, eliminating the need to import from Europe or the USA.

Moulds and Fixtures for Aerospace

Our VSF gantry systems can print high-strength, low-CTE carbon fiber reinforced materials. We can also machine these parts with the precision required for mold making and part fixtures. The VSF systems are versatile, supporting part assembly, gluing applications, and high-precision tasks, with payload capacities exceeding 1 tone. We also offer materials suitable for moulds with service temperatures up to 140°C.

Recommended Materials:

  • Modified PC – Carbon fibre reinforced (Suitable for autoclave post curing applications)
  • Modified PC – Glass Fiber reinforced
  • PETG - Carbon Fiber Reinforced
  • PETG – Glass Fiber Reinforced

Moulds and Blanks for Fiberglass Composite Manufacturing

The composite industry relies on additive manufacturing for blanks and moulds, which often have long lead times and high costs. Additive manufacturing, combined with 5-axis milling on our VSF Composite systems, offers significant advantages in production accuracy and cost savings. We also provide options like sawing and sanding attachments to increase productivity and reduce manual labor.

Recommended Materials:

  • PETG - Glass Fibre Reinforced (easy to print, low distortion)
  • Modified HDPE - Glass Fibre Reinforced (tough, excellent machining qualities)

Marine Applications

Innomerix provides materials for marine applications like buoys, boats, jetties, and underwater equipment housings. These materials offer UV resistance, anti-fouling properties, high impact strength, and low water absorption. Our 45-degree printing capability enables sealed chambers and multi-hull structures.

Recommended Materials:

  • Modified HDPE – Glass Fiber Reinforced (UV resistant, durable)
  • Modified TPU – Glass Fiber Reinforced (high impact resistance)

Defence Industry Applications

In the demanding defence sector, advanced composites are essential for manufacturing ships, aircraft, and military vehicles. Innomerix is well-positioned to supply these materials, with our VSF Composite machines offering 3D printing, 5-axis milling, part probing, and filament winding, all in one system.

Recommended Materials:

  • Modified TPU – Glass Fiber Reinforced
  • PC - Carbon Fiber Reinforced
  • Modified PP - Carbon Fiber Reinforced
  • Modified HDPE - Carbon Fiber Reinforced

Printing Large Parts for Entertainment Industry, Furniture, Landscaping

Large 3D printed parts in these segments Innomerix offers thermoplastic materials like PETG or HDPE, reinforced with glass fiber for strength and durability. Our materials also perform well in outdoor applications due to enhanced UV resistance. Where you want to produce a lot of parts our VSF systems have the advantage of high extrusion rates and a large print volume so multiple parts cab be printed at the same time, increasing productivity.

Recommended Materials:

  • PETG - Glass Fiber Reinforced
  • Modified HDPE - Glass Fiber Reinforced
